Pro means “at the entrance to”, polis means “community”; these morphemes make the word propolis. It is a resinous mixture- a combination of bees' saliva and beeswax with plant exudates- mucilage, gums, resins, lattices and leaf buds collected by worker bees while foraging. Also called bee glue, propolis is used by the honey bees as a defensive substance and cementing material to seal open spaces in the hives. Later, it was discovered that it's an effective medicine for the treatment of wounds, an anti-cancer as well as an anti-infection medicine for humans.

Royal jelly is a milky secretion, a product of the hypopharyngeal gland of young worker bees used to feed developing queen bees.
